Supporting children through grief and loss

At Woodlands, we are committed to supporting the emotional wellbeing of our children and families, particularly during times of loss and change. To support this, we have created a Grief and Loss Mini Library, containing a carefully selected range of age-appropriate books to help children understand and cope with bereavement. These books are kept in school and can be borrowed by parents/carers when needed by signing them out, with several copies of each title available.

Alternatively, if you wish to access books online, we recommend the following titles:

  • The Invisible String – Patrice Karst

  • Where Did She Go? – Cariad Lloyd & Tom Percival

  • Badger's Parting Gifts – Susan Varley

We understand that every child experiences grief differently and may express their feelings in a variety of ways. Our school offers emotional and pastoral support, time with trusted adults, and guidance for families to help children feel safe, supported, and understood during difficult times.

Families may also find the following organisations helpful:

  • Winston’s Wish

  • Child Bereavement UK

  • Cruse Bereavement Support

If your family is affected by loss or grief and you would like support, please contact the school office or speak to a member of the pastoral or safeguarding team. We are here to listen and to help in any way we can.
