Our Million Dreams Curriculum: Intent

Improving outcomes is the purpose of the school and is a shared commitment and at Woodlands, everything we do comes down to one shared commitment: helping your child Learn, Play and Thrive.

We created our Million Dreams curriculum to inspire every child to have a **big** dream for their future.

We want them to grow up confident, curious, and ready for an exciting, diverse world—learning to be kind, accepting, and responsible citizens along the way We feel privileged to be on that journey with them that begins in Early Years, where we help your child build courage, curiosity, and independence through creative, hands-on learning.  During their time at Woodlands they will enjoy:

• A rich, diverse curriculum: Designed by our own teachers, our curriculum covers all National Curriculum subjects in a way that links ideas together, helping children build naturally on what they already know.

• Reading at the Heart: Reading is the key that unlocks all learning. We place reading and handwriting at the centre of school life so children can express themselves with ease.

• Thinking Like Scientists, Geographers & Historians: Children are taught specific subject skills—learning how to investigate like a scientist or explore sources of evidence like a historian.

• Making Knowledge Stick: We use regular, gentle recall practice so new facts settle into long-term memory, leaving children's minds clear and ready for new challenges.

• A Say in Their Learning: We give children opportunities to help shape how they learn, keeping them motivated, excited, and proud of their work.

Our Million Dreams Curriculum: Implementation 

We bring learning to life through exciting termly themes with fun, intriguing names designed to spark your child’s curiosity. Behind the fun, every topic is carefully planned to ensure children build key skills and knowledge step-by-step.

Throughout the year, we also explore special mini-topics—like studying our local area, celebrating religious festivals, marking Black History Month, and Anti-Bullying Week to name a few.

Every child is included and supported to succeed, following all national guidelines for Early Years, SEND, and equality. Best of all, we make school unmissable and learning unforgettable with hands-on activities, school trips, workshops, and guest visitors.

We regularly review our curriculum to give your children the best possible education. Leaders visit classrooms, check exercise books, listen to pupil feedback, and track progress to make sure our teaching works for everyone.

Through clear learning plans, visual memory aids, and carefully designed activities, every child can join in and be challenged to 'think hard'. We also use knowledge organisers—simple summary sheets—to help children remember key facts.

Our knowledge-rich curriculum builds the core skills and understanding children need to step smoothly into their next year group and future education. By learning subject-specific vocabulary, pupils can connect ideas across different subjects and deepen their overall learning.

We believe that deep knowledge builds confidence, helping children speak up, join in conversations, and engage with the wider world. When children leave Woodlands, they do so with pride in themselves, their achievements, and their contribution to our school community.

At Woodlands, we believe that our Million Dreams curriculum should empower all children to be outstanding in all that they do. 

Ultimately, we want children to have a **big** dream for their future and  to make a positive contribution to the exciting, diverse world that is waiting for them. We aim to prepare them to be responsible citizens and live successfully, modelling tolerance and acceptance in a multicultural society.

At the heart of what we do is a shared understanding that everyone has a responsibility to ensure every child is prepared for the next stage of their education. It is our privilege to be part of each child’s unique educational journey. All staff understand that this starts with excellent early years provision which develops children’s courage, curiosity and therefore, resilience.  Our Early Years Curriculum is where we begin to establish the expectations of learning to encourage children to become confident and creative independent thinkers. 

Designed and created by Woodlands teachers, Our Million Dreams curriculum is a knowledge-led, broad, balanced and challenging curriculum covering all National Curriculum subjects, for the children of the community we serve. Teachers carefully plan the interleaving of knowledge between subjects within overarching learning hooks, ensuring there is progression throughout the school, with the added benefit of links to previous and future knowledge.

At Woodlands, we recognise that reading is one of the most important ways to make a difference to children's life chances; therefore, it is embedded across the curriculum, through Learning To Read, Reading To Learn and Reading For Pleasure. To ensure every child is able to access the learning, communication and language, phonics, reading and handwriting also underpin the whole curriculum. Once reading and handwriting become automated, more vital working memory space becomes available for the learning.

Within each subject discipline we aim to ensure children are taught to develop specific skills. For example, children are explicitly taught about sources of information through the eyes of an historian, or the importance of an enquiry based approach through the eyes of a scientist. Children have frequent and targeted retrieval practice which helps move learning from short term memory into long term memory freeing up vital working memory space for acquiring new knowledge. Furthermore, children are invited to take ownership of their learning through curriculum co-construction opportunities such as planning how they want to learn  which enthuse and motivate them. 

 

Our Million Dreams Curriculum: Implementation 

Overarching hooks for learning have been carefully developed and planned to motivate and engage our children. We have given them exciting names to help promote inquisitiveness whilst giving clues as to content. They are underpinned by subject specific drivers each term with an appropriate balance of knowledge, skills and progression to enable children to make greater sense of their learning and next steps. 

In addition, we have  mini topics covering a variety of themes, for example: our local area study, religious festivals, Black History Month, Anti-Bullying week etc. Our curriculum meets the needs of all our children whilst complying with our duties in the National Curriculum 2014, The Early Years Curriculum, the Equality Act 2010 and The Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014. 

‘Hands on’ experiences, such as trips, workshops and access to visitors linked to the curriculum, are well planned to enrich the children’s experiences.

Our curriculum is systematically reviewed, with its implementation and impact continuously monitored by senior and subject leaders through lesson drop-ins, book looks, staff and pupil voice, and assessments. To support high-quality teaching and learning, subject leaders utilize curriculum and vocabulary progression documents alongside dual coding and thoughtful task design. These tasks are crafted to ensure full accessibility for all children while encouraging them to 'think hard'. Additionally, knowledge organisers are used throughout to support learning.

Our knowledge rich curriculum will enable the skills and breadth of content for children to make links to the next year group or the next stage of their education.  Acquiring subject specific vocabulary will allow them to build links and enhance their learning across other subjects. We strongly believe that  deeper knowledge will give our children the confidence to join conversations which in turn will enable greater access to the wider world. 

Children will leave Woodlands with a sense of pride in themselves, their learning and the role they have played in the community at Woodlands.
