Pupil VOice and Leadership

Responsibilities and roles within the school is a popular way to engage Pupil voice. School councils and pupil voice groups usually work on the basis of one or two representatives per class meeting termly as a group. They bring issues to school leadership and input into some of the school decision-making processes.

Children and young people can offer unique perspectives on what it is like to be a pupil at their school; involving them in decision-making can create meaningful change and better academic outcomes, as well as facilitating a sense of empowerment and inclusion.

Updates During this Academic Year

The School Council:

The School Council has been very busy this term and have introduced two key changes to our school day.

Firstly, they have created an oracy poster that outlines clear discussion rules to support children when sharing ideas, both in small groups and during whole-class discussions. These ideas were taken from children across the school, and the School Council was responsible for narrowing down ideas to 5 key points.

Secondly, they have introduced a Rights Certificate, which members are responsible for awarding once a week. These certificates recognise pupils who actively promote children’s rights, such as offering to play with someone, as every child has the right to play with a friend at playtimes and lunchtime.

The School Council members have visited classrooms to deliver these new initiatives, supported by a presentation and guidance to help staff and children embed them into daily practice.

Attendance Ambassadors:

At Woodlands, we believe that good attendance is the foundation of a successful and happy school experience. To help promote this, we are proud to have a dedicated team of Attendance Ambassadors.

Our Ambassadors are a group of pupils from across the school who have taken on the responsibility of championing the importance of being in school every day and on time. Their key areas of responsibility include:

  • Raising Awareness: They work closely with staff to promote the benefits of good attendance and help their peers understand why every day counts.

  • Morning Routines: You will see our Ambassadors supporting with register routines in the morning, helping classes start their day in an organised and positive way.

  • Creative Promotion: They use their creative talents to design posters and cards that are displayed around the school to remind every one of our attendance goals.

  • Celebrating Success: One of their favourite roles is presenting certificates during assembly to celebrate pupils who have shown improved attendance, ensuring that hard work and progress are always recognised.

The Sports / Play Leaders

The Sports/play leaders are responsible for supporting the organisation of the school's PE equipment to ensure resources are ready for use. This role supports a positive playground environment by facilitating safe and engaging activities that ensure playtime remains fun for all students. Additionally, Sports Leaders will actively assist staff in the coordination and delivery of school-wide sporting events and competitions.
